The City of Horton Power & Light, the municipal electric utility (“Utility” or “the Utility”), operates an approximate five (5) megawatt (“mW”) peak distributional and generational facility. The City supplies the electric needs for approximately 990 connections, including four (4) industries, an elementary and high school, more than thirty (30) commercial retailers, and approximately 960 residential households. Totaled, there are approximately 1,967-persons who live within the City of Horton and receive electric service from the City.

Horton Power & Light is tied via a Westar Energy 34.5 kV line to the Muscotah sub-unit, which connects the Cities of Hiawatha with the 161 kV line from Nortonville. The HP&L main transformer has a capacity of five (5) MVA, greatly limiting the external energy resources available on the market and likely creating a situation where HP&L will beorton operates a local distribution company (LDC), known as Horton Power & Light, which is responsible for not only distribution to residents and other electric power customers within the city limits of the City of Horton, but also is responsible for the generation of electricity from four (4) diesel generators having aEMD No. 4 Generator maximum generation capacity of approximately 5.5 megawatts (MW).  The Horton Power & Light LDC was established in 1936 as part of a project to provide reliable and cost-efficient energy to the City of Horton and the surrounding region.  The City of Horton provided electricity to the Brown-Atchison Rural Electric Cooperative, the first R.E.C. west of the Mississippi River.

The City has approximately 5.5 mW of generating capacity under four-separate internal combustion-diesel generators.  The City's four generators include a 1 mW ALCO generator, two individual EMD 1 mW generators, and one EMD 2.5 mW generator.

Tours of the distribution and generation facility are available by calling (785) 486-2681 or by e-mailing powerandlight@hortonkansas.net.  Vendors interested in soliciting goods and/or services to Horton Power and Light are encouraged to register with the City of Horton's Central Vendor Database Registry available under the Procurement section of hortonkansas.net.
