Horton, Kans.  The Horton City Commission on Monday (3/3) authorized the City Administrator to enter into negotiations with the Black & Veatch Corporation ("BVC") to conduct comprehensive project management, including design, permitting, and inspection, for the performance of the Mission Lake Restoration Project ("MLRP").

The MLRP is a multi-year public water supply restoration pilot demonstration funded by the City of Horton and, in part, the Kansas State Conservation Commission ("SCC") under the Multipurpose Small Lakes Program (K.A.R. 11-4-1).  Total project cost is estimated to be $8.1M and is a comprehensive restoration effort focused on lake basin restoration via hydraulic dredging, watershed management of nutrient, atrazine and sediment loadings, and sedimentation mitigation measures.

Mission Lake was designed by Black & Veatch in 1923 and was constructed at a total cost of $170,000.00 in
1925.  Mission Lake, while currently being used as a secondary water supply during lake restoration, Mission Lake is expected to provide water to more 4,000 people in south Brown County, Kansas.
